This is such an unusual little book – it contains excerpts/short stories and poems written by various authors, all written about aspects of life on the British Isles.
The introduction by J. B. Priestley describes “When we think of romantic and beautiful islands, we think of places like Tahiti in the South Seas and Trinidad in the Caribbean Sea. And certainly these are romantic and beautiful islands, as I know quite well, for I have stayed on them. What we forget, however, is that we live on a romantic and beautiful island too, the isle of Britain”.
The subjects of the pieces in this book are farming, nature, trees, roads, places, village sketches, the Vandals and nostalgia. There are wonderful black and white photos too.

£6.80My Amazon Adventure – Sebastian Snow – Vintage Book – 1956
A really interesting little book telling the stories of Sebastian Snow’s adventures in the Amazon.
It starts off with Mr Snow telling us how he saw an advert in The Times asking for “Extra gun may be wanted for sporting and exploring expedition western Amazonia. Highest references offered and expected..”. Can you imagine seeing that advert and applying, simply because you had always had a desire for “travel and adventure”? Now that’s a way to start a fresh new life I’d say!
This is a lovely small book with a pretty yellow cover, and contains some really great black and white photos of the adventures.

£4.25The Houses in Between – Howard Spring – Vintage Book – Novel – 1954
A sweet little book with lovely thin pages, in a dark green cover.
This is a novel first published in 1951 – this version is 1954.
What appealed to me was this opening to the author’s foreword; “I see from some old letters that as long ago as 1940 I wrote to my agents asking them to obtain for me a copy of the music hall song containing the words: ‘You could see the Crystal Palace if it wasn’t for the houses in between’. The pathetic significance of the Crystal Palace had for long appealed to my imagination, and I wanted to make a novel out of the contrast between that fragile promise of peace and the dreadful realities of the years that followed”. What an image of the war years we get from that little opening paragraph.

£4.25The East Wind of Love – Compton Mackenzie – Vintage Book – 1937
A lovely vintage book published in 1937.
This book says it is “book one of ‘The Four Winds of Love’.
The opening chapter starts…. “At twenty-three minutes to five on a cold Friday afternoon of encroaching fog in the month of March, 1900, Mr Askew, the Latin Master of the Upper and Lower Sixth forms at St James’s School, tugged at a grizzled red beard, twitched a rapid eyelid several times over each bright blue eye, swung a leonine head slowly from side to side as if it were weighing the pros and cons of a delicate decision, and at last, with a rusty sigh, announced that he supposed they must have some light on the situation”.
I just love the language used… a rusty sigh… and a grizzled red beard 🙂
